ACT 5 Final Reflection


Reflecting back on the story of Romeo and Juliet, think of a modern day (something that has happened in the last decade) story that has similar themes to this story. With a partner, brainstorm a list of themes in Romeo and Juliet and write down how they are present in the story.

Then, pick one theme to focus on and find a modern day event with a similar theme.With your partner, discuss the ways in which this story is similar to that of Romeo and Juliet.

Next, find a news article or video clip about this modern -day story and link this to your blog. Working with your partner, write 3 paragraphs about this article or video and how it relates to Romeo and Juliet.

Your paragraphs should follow this format:

Paragraph 1: Explain the theme you chose and how it is present in Romeo and Juliet (cite examples from the play).

Paragraph 2: Briefly summarize the article/news story you found and explain how the theme is present in this story.

Paragraph 3: Explain the similarities and differences (at least 2 each) between the modern-day news story and Romeo and Juliet. Include your chosen theme in this discussion.

Act 4 Reflection

Reminder: Answer all questions in AT LEAST 3-5 sentences...

1. Do you feel sympathy for the Capulets, Nurse, and Paris when they express grief over Juliet's death? Why or why not? (Give an explanation for each):

2. How might older and younger audiences differ in their opinion of Romeo's and Juliet's actions? Explain your opinion by using specific examples from the play.


3. Do you believe the risks that Juliet have taken are justified in her attempt to avoid marriage with Paris? Could Juliet have gotten out of the marriage in any other way? Explain your opinion using details from Act 3 and Act 4.

Act 3 Reflection

Remember: Answer each question in 3-5 sentences.

1. Look over your Act 3 Chart -- which event do you believe creates the most problems for Romeo and Juliet? Explain using examples from the text.

2. Make sure answer all three parts:
A.) What is Romeo's motivation (reason) for killing Tybalt?
B.)What are the consequences of this action?
C.) Do you believe his behavior is justified revenge or a disastrous mistake? Explain.

3. What major decisions have Romeo and Juliet made in the play so far (name at least 3)? Which of these decisions do you support? Which do you think were foolish or too sudden? Explain.

Act 2 Reflection

Here are your questions for Act 2:

** Answers should use examples from the text and be well-thought. Each answer should be AT LEAST 3-5 sentences.

1. Why do you believe Romeo and Juliet rush to get married after declaring their love? Support your inference with evidence from the text. Then explain whether you think the young lovers get married too soon, and why or why not.

2.   On page. 983, re-read Mercutio's lines 77-81. In these lines, Mercutio expresses his relief that Romeo seems to be himself again. What is Mercutio's opinion about people who "brood over love"? What might be the purpose of including Mercutio's opinion on love?

3. What aspects of the play have you found to be the most realistic? Explain. What aspects do you find hard to believe? Explain.

Extra Credit: Shakespeare is often praised for this masterly use of figurative language, or language that communicates ideas beyond the ordinary, literal meaning of the words. Find two examples of particularly striking figurative language in Act Two. Give a quote of each, and explain what it means.

Romeo and Juliet - Act 1 Reflection

Here are your Act 1 Questions:

1. Character foils: A foil is a character who highlights, through contrast (differences), the qualities of another character. Identify two characters in Act 1 who are foils for each other. What do you learn about the characters by seeing them in contrast to one another?

2. Both Romeo and Juliet forshawdow in the Act - what do they forshadow? Make a prediction of what you believe might happen. Juliet's foreshadowing is located on pg. 966, Romeo's on 963.

Extra Credit Question: Works with tremendous critical acclaim can sometimes fail to live up to our expectations. Is Romeo and Juliet living up to your expectations? Explain.

Here are your instructions:
1.You will create your own blog. Your username should be your first name and last initial, for instance Mary S.

2. Once you have your blog created, click on the link for my blog on my moodle page: moodle.sandi.net, and follow my blog (at the top). You must follow it publicly.

3. We will be blogging response to analytical quesitons at the end of each Act of Romeo and Juliet. This will be an easy way for you to keep your work together, and an easy way for me to check your work.

4. I will post questions on my blog for you to answer at the end of each Act. You will copy and paste the questions into your new blog.  Once you have done this, please title your blog Romeo and Juliet - Act ? (which ever act you are currently working on).

5. Blogs will be due at the end of the class, every period. Please make sure to follow my blog - so that you can easily access it and as a result - I can easily access yours.

6. Each blog entry will be work 10 points - late blogs can be made up at lunch or after school.

7.  When we post for a new Act (or scene) - you will also be responsible for responding to one of your classmates posts.  For instance, when we Blog for Act 2, you will also respond to another person's blog for Act 1.
